Even with some performances put on hold until COVID-19 wears out its welcome, The Straz Center for the Performing Arts will offer an exciting array of entertainment throughout the month of May.
The Straz’s May lineup includes performances from students, comedians and dancers.
On May 1, students from The Patel Conservatory will hold their spring recitals. On May 7 during the Kreeps with Kids Comedy Tour performance, four New York comedians will take dad jokes to an adult rating. Next Generation Ballet’s Swan Lake will take the stage in Morsani Hall for several performances on May 8 and May 9. Swan Lake tells the sad tale of Odette, turned into a swan by a wicked sorcerer. Her only way back is through the love of Prince Siegfried.
“Undoubtedly, the crown jewel of our May programming is…Swan Lake,” said Straz Center President and CEO Judy Lisi. “But the month is also filled with great performances from our Patel Conservatory students and with wonderful tunes from the musicians in our Live & Local series.”
Voices of the Community Town Hall – Dance, Dance, Dance, a free town hall event, will take place on May 27. Artists and experts representing the African American tapestry of dance in the Tampa Bay area will discuss how the art form helped define the communal and cultural richness of our communities of color.
On May 21, the Straz High School Afro Latin Jazz orchestra will perform Arts Legacy REMIX: Jazz, Jazz, Jazz on the Straz Riverwalk Stage. The performance, which emphasizes the big band sounds of Afro Latin Jazz, is free.
