Celebrate Archives Awareness Week with Hillsborough County Libraries

Archives Awareness Week was created in 1992 by the City of Tampa Archives Advisory Committee. During this time, local archives come together to present their collections through exhibits and programs. They work to show the value of archives in the preservation and continuation of the city’s history.

You can take a glimpse into the past with your local library during Archives Awareness Week from July 10 to16. During this time, Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library is celebrating local archives and the importance of preserving the region’s history.

The library has events and a photo challenge planned throughout the week to provide an inside look at the library’s immense archival collection.

Featured events include:

An Overview to Historic Sanborn Maps

On Tuesday, July 12, at 5 p.m. you can take a look at some of the most intriguing insights into Hillsborough County’s history — Sanborn fire insurance maps. They give an amazing insight into how the County grew and changed over time. During this event, you will learn more about them and their uses.

Money Talks: How Banking Records Contextualize Florida History

On Wednesday, July 13, at 5 p.m. see a presentation that examines the Florida Banking Records collection. It will focus on the origin of the records, how they have been handled, and why these records are important to understanding the history of the Tampa Bay area.

Burgert Re-Enactment Photo Challenge

Throughout the week, the library will also host the Archives Awareness Week Burgert Re-Enactment Photo Challenge. To participate, choose a Burgert Brothers photograph you would like to reenact, find the location and snap a present-day photo! Then, visit @TampaHillsLib on Instagram and send in your photos using the hashtag #LikeABurgert. Three randomly selected winners will receive a Burgert Brothers photo print of their choice donated by Bob Baggett Photography. The contest begins July 10 and ends July 16 by 4 p.m. Winners will be contacted after July 18.

Other Tampa museums are also celebrating Archives Awareness week. Click here to see what exhibits are going on at the moment.
