Swim season in just around the corner, and Pinellas County is looking for seasonal lifeguards to ensure the public health and safety of the community. Individuals who enjoy helping the public in a fast-paced, detail-oriented role should apply. Positions are available for full-time or part-time seasonal employment. Pay starts at $18 per hour for new lifeguards and up to $19.57 per hour for returning senior-level lifeguards.
Lifeguards in Pinellas County
Pinellas County employs both seasonal and year-round lifeguards. The number of lifeguards on duty varying based on the time of year and the number of visitors to the beaches. Peak season runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. During this time, the county employs over 100 lifeguards to cover its 35 miles of coastline.
Lifeguards in Pinellas County are responsible for monitoring the beaches and waterways for potential hazards and responding to emergencies as necessary. They are trained in water rescue techniques, CPR, and first aid. They are equipped with rescue boards, jet skis, and other tools to help them perform their duties.
In addition to their primary duties of water safety and rescue, Pinellas County lifeguards also provide information and education to beachgoers on topics such as rip currents, beach conditions, and beach rules and regulations.
Requirements
Requirements for the position include:
- American Red Cross lifeguarding certification, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience
- Current CPR/AED and first aid certification
- Must complete 500-meter swim under 10 minutes and half-mile run under four minutes
- Must be able to complete the 40-hours of training provided by Pinellas County Beach Patrol program
- Must be at least 18 years old on the first day of employment
- Ability to work at county beach parks as schedule and staffing demands change
- Ability to work a variety of schedules including weekends and holidays. Als compulsory work periods in special, emergency and/or disaster situations
- Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license
Highly desirable qualifications:
- Current first responder, EMT or paramedic certification
- At least three months of responsible lifeguarding experience
