Florida scientists develop new tech to image & detect sinkholes

Florida is the sinkhole capital of the world. Fortunately, one of the world’s leaders in developing new sinkhole imaging and detection technology is located right here in Tampa Bay.

A giant, yawning hole that suddenly appears in the ground to swallow up everything in its path sounds like a supernatural threat from some Atomic Age monster movie.

For us Floridians, it’s a fact of life.

If you’re a property owner, the very mention of sinkholes may give you a temporary jolt of anxiety (sorry about that). It’s no wonder why: sinkholes are infamous for destroying homes, vehicles, roads and various forms of supporting infrastructure.

Fortunately, an Odessa-based company, The G3 Group, has developed revolutionary new implant technology that can detect sinkhole activity before it becomes a major problem. The woman-owned, geology-and-engineering-licensed-and-certified business has been conducting sinkhole investigations for residential homeowners, insurance companies and other commercial businesses throughout the U.S. and overseas for the past 20 years.

“We feel that this is an important scientific issue that needs to be resolved,” shared company president Karen Harro. “Our focus is solving questions pertaining to foundation issues, wall cracking, ground depressions and movement in the subsurface.”

G3 Group’s new implant technology, MERIT (Multi-Electrode Resistivity Implant Technique), provides precise imaging for geotechnical investigation of sinkholes, helping uncover the locations of the depressions and assisting in the remediation process. To determine whether the identified sinkholes are dormant or active, G3 Group has also developed a highly innovative detection and monitoring device – an offshoot of MERIT called Sinkhole Alert, which can reach depths of well over 100 feet in the subsurface and provide property owners with a crucial “heads up” if the sinkhole becomes active.
