A Tampa Bay shipyard has just been certified for environmental excellence and improving their socially sustainable practices. Hendry Marine Industries’ Gulf Marine Repair shipyard has been recognized as a certified Green Marine Participant. They received the award at the recent GreenTech Conference in Montreal, Canada. The certification for environmental excellence came after Hendry completed a rigorous and transparent certification process that started in January.

What is Green Marine certification?

Founded in 2007, Green Marine’s North American environmental certification program came from effort in the shipping industry to go beyond government regulatory standards. There are currently over 150 ship owners, port authorities, terminal operators and shipyard managers throughout Canada and the United States taking part in the program.

In order to receive certification, Hendry Marine assessed its environmental performance based on Green Marine’s detailed framework, including:

  • Addressing greenhouse gasses and air pollutants
  • Spill prevention
  • Stormwater management
  • Waste management
  • Community impact
  • Environmental leadership

Certification was granted after an independent review by an external verifier accredited by Green Marine.

“For the maritime industry to continue to thrive, we must protect our environment. This certification shows how committed our company is to being a good environmental steward by implementing the best environmentally and socially sustainable practices.”

Hal Hendry, Special Projects Manager at Hendry Marine

In order to show its continuous improvement of environmental performance and maintain their certification, Hendry Marine will now submit annual self-evaluation reports showing higher levels of completion for each of the performance indicators.

More about Hendry Marine Industries

The Hendry family entered the maritime business in Tampa in 1926, when Captain F.M. Hendry founded Hendry Corporation. A sailor by profession, he commanded ships all over the world and eventually entered the construction business. His company was focused on improving the waterways through professional commitment and innovation techniques.

The family legacy continued under his own son Aaron W. Hendry and Hendry became one of the largest dredging operators in the Eastern U.S. Although dredging is no longer a line of business, the Hendry family of companies now includes a diverse range of maritime businesses, including:

  • Commercial and government ship repair (Gulf Marine Repair)
  • Marine environmental services (Universal Environmental Solutions)
  • Surface preparation and coatings (Anchor Sandblasting and Coatings)

All of the companies are headquartered at the main shipyard’s location in Tampa, Florida.
