Community members, bicyclists, and Hillsborough County officials recently celebrated the opening of a new road that will bring traffic congestion relief to southern Hillsborough County. The new Apollo Beach Flyover overpass now connects Apollo Beach with U.S. 301.
“This is going to ease some pressure and frustration of some people who are living in this growing area,” said Kevin Riggs, a local resident who was in attendance.
The overpass is a vital east-west corridor in South Hillsborough County, with a four-lane divided road over Interstate 75. The new road will reduce traffic congestion and improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. It is also an east-west alternative for drivers that will provide congestion relief for the Big Bend Road corridor to the north.

The Apollo Beach Flyover overpass design includes enhanced safety features consistent with Vision Zero principles, such as an 8-foot sidewalk on the north side of the road, new bicycle lanes, and accessibility in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. While Hillsborough County provided more than $27 million for the extension, the completed project’s connectivity between U.S. 41 and U.S. 301 would not have been possible without the financial contribution of the Department of Transportation and private developers.
