The grants offered through Hillsborough County’s Historic Preservation Challenge Grant program have been announced. Some historic projects in Tampa include giving a new life to an abandoned theater and social club, rescuing a Prohibition-era bootlegger bar, and converting a Masonic Lodge into a microbrewery. There are 18 projects that are scheduled to receive $1.5 million in grants this year to support historic preservation and heritage tourism.
Under the program, businesses and nonprofits can apply for grants of up to $250,000 with a minimum of one-to-one match. The money must rehabilitate historic properties or for projects that help build the heritage tourism industry. Since its inception in 2011, the HPCG program has awarded nearly $12 million for over 100 projects.
