The results are in. The City of Tampa recently conducted an online survey on Accessory Dwelling Units. They received approximately 1,000 responses. The overwhelming majority of participants are interested in learning more about the process of building an ADU on their property. And many responses show residents are interested in creating ADU Airbnbs.
What are ADUs?
Commonly referred to as “mother-in-law” cottages, garage apartments, and tiny homes, ADUs are more affordable than a traditional residence because of their small size. Currently, Tampa’s code only allows ADU’s in Seminole Heights and the area around Lowry Park. Everywhere else in the City, ADU’s may only be created for a family member.
Modern Globe did a story on ADUs a few months ago. We talked to Tampa residents who have embraced the ADU lifestyle as well as a city councilwoman who is in favor of expanding ADU access.
ADU survey results
Now we have the results from 1,000 Tampa residents. Here’s what the City found:
Most people know what an ADU is
Lots of interest in building an ADU
A good amount of ADUs would be for family members
Help is most needed in obtaining loans for ADUs
Household sizes
There is some interest in building affordable housing
Who participated in the survey
City staff will present the proposed changes on ADU code reform at the Thursday, October 27 City Council workshop. Click here to see the summary of proposed code changes.
