In Florida, we know a thing or two about beaches. But what are the unspoken rules of how to behave in such a popular public place? BeachBound surveyed 2,000 Americans who go to the beach and came up with these common beach no-gos.
What do you think?
The most popular rules
Over half the people surveyed agreed that beach goers should adhere to these three rules at the beach:
- Don’t sit too close to others if there is open space (58%)
- Don’t litter (53%)
- Don’t shake off sand too close to others (51%)
The first one can be a little difficult on popular days. Have you ever tried to find a good spot on a Florida beach during Labor Day? The second rule is very important and if you want to do more to help the beach litter problem in Tampa Bay, there are plenty of coastal cleanups you can attend!
And yeah, don’t shake it off (sand, that is) too close to your neighbors.

More controversial
There are some other beach rules that are more divisive. Some beach visitors say these actions are too distracting and can ruin a beach day:
- Engaging in PDA (30%)
- Playing your music too loud (25%)
- Shouting or talking loudly (27%)
- Bringing a pet (26%)
For that last one, Tampa Bay has a lot of beaches that people can visit with their dog.
What are your go-to etiquette rules at the beach?
