Where Will the Peak Surf Park in Tampa Bay Be Located?

A new type of park is coming to the Tampa Bay area. Peak Surf Park is a water park that makes perfect, man-made waves great for both beginner and expert surfers. Peak Surf Park will be built somewhere in the Tampa Bay area, and the company is considering multiple spots in both Hillsborough and Pinellas County. The idea for this park comes from Tony Miller, former CEO and partner at Spark Advertising.

According to Creative Loafing, the Peak model is built around sustainability. A survey completed by a hospitality consultant says that 90% of respondents expressed high interest in the Peak park. There is also a 10 year projection of more than $1.3 billion in business output from the park.

The surf park will include half-a-mile of beach, venues for concerts and events, bars, restaurants, retail and more. Pending permit approvals the park could take two to three years to build. Miller says he wants the park to be accessible to all and intends to make park admission an “nominal” price. Membership passes will also be an option for hard-core surfers.

Surf Lakes Technology

The park will use Australia’s Surf Lakes technology. The Surf Lakes company has created a proprietary method of producing high-quality surfing waves in a controlled lake environment. By sending large concentric waves over separate reef breaks, a Surf Lakes facility is capable of producing up to 2,000 waves per hour. Each wave can vary in size, shape and length. These waves mainly appeal to beginner to intermediate surfers, however, the venue will also be challenging for advanced surfers if required. 

Founder Aaron Trevis got the idea for this technology when he was throwing rocks into the water with his kids:

What followed was a lot of research, looking at how nature makes waves, how one swell interacts with multiple reefs and beaches. Nature was the inspiration because we wanted the waves to be as natural as possible.
